Masters leads men’s golf team to 10th place in Awendaw

The No. 53 Troy men’s golf team used a solid final day of play to earn a 10th place finish in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate tournament hosted by South Carolina.

The 15-team invitational was played over the course of three days from April 3-5 at the Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina.

Freshman Calum Masters led the Trojans, earning his third consecutive top-10 finish in Troy’s final regular season tournament before the Sun Belt Championship Tournament later this month. Masters carded a 3-over 291 in the final round of play on Tuesday, April 5, moving up from 11th place on the second day of the competition into a tie for 10th after the third.

Masters finished with an overall card of 1-under 215 among some 11 other players in the tournament ranked in the top-100 individually. As for the other teams that participated, four of them were ranked in the top-25.

The host, South Carolina, who is currently No. 17 in the nation as a team, was the clear victors in the tournament, as they developed a 15-shot lead over the second-place College of Charleston to claim the title. The Trojans outplayed No. 31 Kentucky for the second time this season, the first being at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn back in March.

Following Masters in the rankings was junior Clayton Vannoy, whose trio of birdies and 1-over 73 on Tuesday earned him 36th place in the final standings.

Supporting Masters and Vannoy’s performances was junior Luke Moser, who played his best round of the tournament on the final day. He tallied five straight birdies on his way to earning a 1-under 71 for the day and 9-over 225 for the tournament.

Moser’s play was good enough to earn him 58th place individually. Behind them were freshman Cam Norman and junior Jared Bettcher, who finished in 66th and 69th place, respectively.

Troy will return to the course on Sunday, April 24, when they travel to Miramar Beach, Florida, to take part in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
