Men’s basketball routs AUM in exhibition opener

The Trojan men’s basketball team picked up an exhibition win against Auburn

University at Montgomery, 97-70, on Thursday, Nov. 6.

The crowd was already hyped from the women’s first basketball game just prior and supported the team loudly. The Trojans established their position on the court early by gaining the lead.

At the end of the first half, the Trojans were up 47-24. The Trojans were playing aggressively on defense and offense. They led AUM in first-half free throws, shooting 79 percent to AUM’s 25 percent. The Trojans also dominated the boards, hauling in 29 to AUM’s 15.

AUM came out of the locker room with a vengeance, making it clear that it would not give up easily. This proved unsuccessful for AUM, as the Trojans came out with just as much energy and skill.

Troy kept its double-digit lead for the rest of the game, winning 97-70.

Freshman forward Jordan Varnado made his debut in this game and began his career with a double-double, scoring 15 points and snagging 10 rebounds. Also during his debut game, Varnado made 5 blocks.

Just behind Varnado was junior guard Jeremy Holliman with 14 points. Sophomore guard Wesley Person and freshman forward Damion Ottman both posted 10 points for the team. Sophomore forward Aaron Ariri and Varnado both recorded 10 rebounds to help out on defense.

The team also shot 43.9 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range, and 77 percent from the free throw line. Scoring 97 points in a season opener made for the second most during head coach Phil Cunningham’s tenure.

The Trojans go on the road for their next game against South Florida on Friday, Nov. 13. After the Bulls, the Trojans will return home to play Reinhardt on Sunday, Nov. 15.
