The Troy men’s golf team came away with a third-place finish after the final round of play at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Duluth, Georgia.
Junior Clayton Vannoy led the Trojans with a 3-under-213 finish, earning a fourth-place overall finish in the 54-hole event. The tournament, held at the Berkley Hills Country Club, featured 18 teams, including 19th-ranked South Florida and 35th-ranked College of Charleston.
The Trojans were met with a fair amount of success after the first day of play on Monday, Oct. 12. Following the first round of play, junior Jared Bettcher helped his team jump from sixth place to third with a 3-under-69 performance. Behind him were fellow juniors Clayton Vannoy and Luke Moser, both with a 1-under-par 71.
In the first two rounds of the tournament, Vannoy finished with 10 birdies to tie for fifth place after the first day of the tournament.
In the second day of the tournament, Troy held its third-place standing in the tournament, fighting off UNC in the final five holes to earn its standing.
Vannoy led the Trojans once again in the final day of the tournament, recording 4 birdies in the third round. With his fourth-place finish, Vannoy has now had two top-10 and three top-25 finishes in four tournament appearances this season.
Junior Cam Norman also performed at a high level on the second day of the tournament, earning a tie for 16th place after a two-under-par 70. Moser was right behind him in 34th place, recording a 3-over-75 to bounce back from double-bogeys on the third and fifth holes of the course.
Junior Sean Stone and freshman Calum Masters rounded out the standings for the Trojans, finishing 45th and 60th, respectively.
The men’s team will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they participate in the three-day Intercollegiate at the Grove tournament in College Grove, Tennessee.
