Men’s golf opens spring schedule with last place finish at Gator invite

The Troy men’s golf team finished play in the Gator Invitational on Sunday, taking home a 16th-place overall finish at the two-day event in Gainesville, Florida.

Of the 16 teams in play, Florida, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Arkansas highlighted the invitational as some of the nation’s top talent, with Vanderbilt edging the hosting Gators for the top spot.

Dean Martin and Ike Alexander led the way for the Trojans, coming in ties for 68th and 73rd place, respectively. Martin carded a 1-over 71, the best individual score for Troy after landing three birdies in the first 10 holes. Martin wrapped up the weekend with a 76-76-71 card. Alexander followed closely with a 77-73-74 performance, finishing just one behind Martin’s 223 finish.

Calum Masters’ 73-79-74 card was good enough for the tie for 81st place. Masters fired two birdies in Sunday’s finale on holes two and nine, but still landed two shots behind Alexander on the day.

Jake Tiffin and Fannar Steingrimssom rounded out the lineup for the Trojans, finishing in a tie for 86th place and 90th place, respectively.

Tiffin shot an 8-over 78 on Sunday to finish with a 70-81-78 scorecard after three rounds. Tiffin was the leading Trojan after the first round, leading Masters by three shots.

Steingrimssom shot 9-over 79 in the first and third round, splitting the pair with a 15-over 85 to land him behind his teammates.

The team now looks ahead to this Saturday as it travels to Tallahassee, Florida, to take part in the Seminole Invitational. The two-day event will be hosted by Florida State
