The Troy men’s golf team jumped two spots in the rankings to finish eighth at The Invitational at Kiawah on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The 16-team competition was played out in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, where senior Clayton Vannoy led the Trojans with a tie for 11th place individually.
After recording a collective 3-over 288 in the first two rounds of play on Monday, Sept. 12, Troy shot an even round of 288 to move from tenth to eight after the third and final round. Troy’s third round was tied only by Maryland, who finished third.
Vannoy only just missed out on a top-ten individual finish, despite a 1-over 72 for the third round and a 2-under 216 for the tournament.
Following Vannoy was senior Luke Moser, who was unable to sustain a strong finish through the final round and as a result finished 25th. Despite being 2-under 36 after the first eight holes of the round, Moser recorded triple bogeys on two consecutive holes that kept him from further ascending the rankings.
Senior Cam Norman, who finished the first day of play in a tie for 58th, turned it up a notch in the third round with six birdies and two shots under 72 to finish tied for 33rd.
Senior Jared Bettcher and sophomore Calum Masters rounded out the individual placings for Troy, finishing 44th and 63rd overall, respectively. Bettcher had five birdies in the final round as part of an even 72 performance, while Masters put away a brace of birdies for a 1-over 72 showing.
The Trojans will return to action when they travel to College Grove, Tennessee, where they will take part in the Intercollegiate at The Grove hosted by Middle Tennessee. The tournament will take place between Sept. 18-20.
