Men’s golf places third in Duluth

The Troy men’s golf team put up a good performance in Duluth, Georgia, finishing third in the Autotrader.com Collegiate Classic.

The 13-team tournament was hosted by Georgia State and concluded play on Tuesday, Oct. 18. It featured the Trojans’ senior Clayton Vannoy, who tied for third place in the individual rankings.

Vannoy is currently ranked No. 53 in the nation, and he looked the part in the tournament, turning in a 7-under 209 after three rounds of play. His play was highlighted by a 3-under 69 performance in the second round, which helped him ascend the rankings.

Senior Jared Bettcher recorded the third-lowest score of the second day, bouncing back from an above-par first round to fire a 5-under 67 and earn himself a spot in a five-way tie for 16th place.

One of those tied with Bettcher was teammate and senior Cam Norman, who carded a 1-under 215 for the tournament. Norman played a brilliant first round, shooting four shots under par, but a 2-over and a 1-over in the next two rounds kept him from sneaking into the top 10 individual rankings.

Senior Luke Moser followed up with a solid performance of his own, moving up seven spots after the second round into a tie for 21st place. Moser finished the tournament with an even par on his scorecard, thanks to a 1-under 71 in the third round.

Sophomore Calum Masters finished with a 3-under second round, earning a tie for 28th. Freshmen Sam Prater and Jake Tiffin rounded out the Trojans in the field, finishing 72nd and 82nd, respectively.

No. 25 Ole Miss took the overall title in the tournament with a team-total 33-under 831 in the tournament, 15 shots ahead of second-place Lipscomb.

The Trojans will return to action for the three-day Kiawah Classic tournament starting on Sunday, Oct. 30. The tournament will be hosted by Charleston Southern University in Kiawah Island, North Carolina.
