Troy’s men’s golf started off its season at The Invitational at Kiawah at The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, on Sept. 12-14.
On day one of the invitational, sophomore Jared Bettcher tied for ninth. He sunk an eagle on the 11th hole and made birdies on holes No. 12, 14 and 16.
Sophomore Luke Moser and senior Philip Brennan tied for 27th the first day, both shooting 75. Senior Tolver Dozier sank consecutive birdies on holes No. 2 and 3.
South Florida led the first day, with the College of Charleston, Duke,
Kentucky and Georgia Southern making up the remaining top five. Troy followed, tied for sixth place with Georgia.
“All in all, we didn’t play too bad, and we are just six shots out of second place,” head coach Matt Terry said. “We didn’t make enough putts, and we didn’t get off to a great start. But we had it going after that, and our guys knew it.”
On Saturday, Sept. 13, Bettcher led the Trojans by birdieing three of his final holes. Finishing 4-under, he took fourth place. Moser had four birdies and tied for 25th, while Brennan had three birdies and tied for 34th.
Troy moved up to the top five after shooting a 290 for the day. South Florida still led the invitational by 16 strokes.
On the final day of The Invitational at Kiawah, Troy pulled out all the stops and passed Kentucky to take fourth place.
Bettcher led the team by tying for third with Georgia Southern’s senior Scott Wolfes and Western Carolina’s senior J.T. Poston.
Dozier and Moser both finished the week tied for 25th. Senior Jake Tucker had more luck on Sunday and finished with 1-over 73 during the final round and tied for 33rd.
The men’s golf team will compete again on Sept. 28-29 at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
