Men’s hoops tops AUM 84-65

Rachael Wilkerson

The Troy men’s basketball team defeated AUM in an exhibition game 84-65 in Trojan Arena on Thursday night.

The Trojans jumped out to a 24-7 lead by the 12:47 mark in the first period before going ahead 46-36 at the half.

With just 22 seconds left in the game, freshman Whit Moreman made his first Trojan appearance with a quick rebound and a two-point buzzer beater to end the game.

Troy led AUM in first-half field goals, shooting 46 percent to the Warhawks’ 33 percent. The momentum did not change in the second half, as the Trojans maintained the lead thanks in part to 88.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Against the Warhawks, junior guard Wesley Person led the team in scoring with 18 points, including three back-to-back three-pointers.

Senior forward DeVon Walker, a transfer from Florida, added 14 points to go along with nine rebounds, six assists and two dunks.

Fourteen out of 15 Troy players saw action in the game, giving Head Coach Phil Cunningham a chance to see his players in action before the start of the regular season.

Kevin Baker scored 11 points in his debut as a Trojan, while sophomore Alex Hicks also saw his first action following an injury. Hicks shot 4-for-7 from the field and added 10 points.

For freshman Darian Adams, it was more than an exhibition game; it was a competition between him and his brother, Desmond Deramus. Deramus led the Warhawks with 19 points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds.

The Trojans will host its season opener in Trojan Arena this Friday against Toccoa Falls. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
