Men’s tennis drops pair of Florida matches

The Troy University men’s tennis team traveled to Florida this weekend to play the University of Miami and FSU.

Troy fell in another tight match against the Hurricanes, losing 4-3 on Saturday, Jan. 30, but the Sunday match with the Seminoles was not as close. The Trojans lost 4-1.

Senior Daniel Bustamante had a great match against the No. 23 player in the country, beating sophomore Piotr Lomacki 6-4, 6-2.

Junior Francisco Yim Kim’s match was a different outcome, though, as he lost easily to No. 107 Max Andrews 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Andy Lau put up a tough fight in his line two singles match against sophomore No. 70 Christian Langmo. He won the first set 6-4, but lost the next two 6-1, 6-3.

Junior Pablo Moreno’s line four singles didn’t go much better, as he lost to junior Jesse Flores 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Filip Mansson had a tough match but pulled it out in three sets, beating freshman Fermin Calvo 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Mustapha Belcora also won his match 6-0, 6-0 against sophomore Kevin Bondar.

Baldo and Yim Kim lost the line one doubles match to Flores and Langmo 6-3. Moreno and Mansson lost their match by the same score to Lomacki and sophomore Nile Clark.

Belcora and Lau’s doubles match went unfinished at 3-3, but those two doubles wins gave Miami the extra point to edge out Troy.

Troy then traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, the following day to play No. 29 Florida State University. The day did not go as the Trojans had hoped, as they did not finish every match.

Moreno had Troy’s only win, as he defeated redshirt sophomore Jose Gracia 6-4, 6-1.

Bustamante’s singles match didn’t come close to his win against Miami. He lost 6-2, 6-2 to redshirt senior No. 15 Benjamin Lock. Freshman Vaclav Slezak also lost his match, to senior No. 77 Marco Nunez 6-4, 6-4.

Lau’s singles match against Aziz Dougaz was unfinished at one set each, 3-6, 6-4, 0-3. Belcora’s singles match against Jake Albo also went unfinished, but Albo led 6-3, 4-5.

Mansson’s singles match was over fairly quickly, being the first match of the day. Mansson lost 6-1, 6-3 to sophomore Terrance Whitehurst.

Freshman Tomas Fernandez and Mansson lost the doubles match 6-2 against Nunez and Lock, and Lau and Baldo lost 6-4 against sophomore brothers Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst.

Belcora and Moreno lost a close match 7-5 against Jose Gracia freshman Aziz Dougaz.

Troy next matchup is on the road against No. 55 Auburn on Friday, Jan. 5, but the Troy Trojan Jamboree starts the same day in Troy.
