The Troy Trojans men’s tennis team bumped its win streak up to seven with a pair of weekend wins against Xavier University of Louisiana on Friday, March 20, and Columbus State on Saturday, March 21.
The women’s team was not as successful, as it dropped two matches during the weekend
On Friday, March 20, Troy won four singles matches and left one unfinished. The Trojans were victorious in all three doubles matches against Xavier.
Sophomore Hassan Ndayishimye defeated 12th-ranked NAIA junior Kyle Montrel 7-5, 6-2. Junior Gabriel Dias won his match 6-4, 6-4 against senior Nikita Soifer.
Freshman Andy Lau won his match against sophomore Jordan Harrell 6-2, 6-2, and junior Daniel Bustamante won his match 6-2, 6-4 against sophomore Tushar Mandlekar.
Ndayishimye and Dias won their line one doubles match 6-0 against Montrel and Soifer.
Lau and freshman Austin Racine won their doubles match 6-3, and sophomore Andre Baldo and junior William McClelland won their match 6-3 against sophomore Adam Albrecht and junior Kevin Chaouat.
On Saturday, March 21, Troy won four singles matches with two unfinished, and lost two doubles matches against Columbus State, with one unfinished.
Dias won his match against senior Oussama Zoghlami 6-3, 6-3. Ndayishimye won his match 6-1, 6-3 against senior Adi Malicbegovic.
Lau beat freshman Martynas Zakaitis, and Bustamante won his match against freshman Jorge Vargas 6-3, 6-2.
The Troy women’s tennis team did the opposite, as it lost both matchups last Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22.
In the Trojans’ matchup against Georgia Southern on Saturday, they won only two singles matches, but won all three doubles matches.
Junior Trang Huynh defeated senior Jordana Klein 6-3, 6-2, and freshman Jiayuan Xue won her match 6-3, 6-3 against sophomore Giulia Riepe.
Huynh and junior Anja Cosovic won their line one doubles match 8-1 against freshman Anne Kurzweil and junior Mary Phillips Smith.
Freshman Linnea Skymberg and Xue won their match against junior Francisca Norregaard and sophomore Daria Vasekina 8-0. Freshman Sanae Ohta and junior Brooke Durden won 8-1 against Klein and Riepe.
The Troy women put on a poor showing against undefeated South Alabama on Sunday, March 22. Huynh was the only person to win her match. Her final score was 6-1, 6-2 against sophomore Laura Valkova.
The men’s and women’s tennis team’s next match is March 27-29 in Troy at the Troy Spring Invitational.
