Montgomery leads indoor track teams in Iron City

The Troy indoor track and field team saw several records fall in Friday’s UAB Blazer Invitational in the Trojans’ first meet in over a month.

The Trojans were matched up against several Power Five programs including the University of Miami and the University of Alabama.

Hakim Montgomery highlighted Troy’s outing at the Birmingham Crossplex by bringing home the top spot in the 60-meter dash. Montgomery ran a qualifying 6.77-second race in the preliminaries, but shaved a tenth of a second off that time to win the event with a 6.68, edging Mississippi State’s Lawrence Crawford’s time of 6.71.

Also making their presence known in the men’s standings was the freshman trio of Jordan McCleskey, Jared Hayes and Amir Harris. The three took 12th, 13th and 14th place in the 500-meter dash, with Harris clocking in at 1:05.74 to lead the group. The runners took the top three spots as the fastest 500-meter runners in Troy’s history.

A pair of throwers for the Trojans broke their own school records for the second consecutive meet as Michael Alvernaz and Indiya Summerville finished in third and fourth place in their respective events. Alvernaz placed himself between two finishers from Ole Miss with his 19.37-meter toss in the men’s weight throw to set a new record mark for the school. Summerville earned a top-five finish after her 14.62-meter heave in the women’s shotput surpassed the record she set on Dec. 1.

The Trojans are back in action Thursday and Friday when they compete in the Samford Combined Events in Birmingham. This meet, along with the next three for Troy, will be held in the Birmingham Crossplex.
