The Mu Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha is hosting a donation project to collect hats, clothes and scarves for families in need.
This project is one of many that serve as part of its mission as an organization.
“When we’re thinking about an Alpha Kappa Alpha as a college student, it’s first of all academics, then community service and then social,” said Teresa Townsend, the chapter’s graduate adviser from Enterprise.
“Where other colleges are more concerned with social, we are more concerned with helping our community.”
“Service with a smile” is one of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mottos that members abide by, searching for ways to help the Troy community throughout the year.
Nationwide, the organization is focusing on initiatives that promote its mission to include educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership and, lastly, global impact.
Its current project falls under the third initiative: family strengthening.
“If we help at least one family, I feel we’ve done good,” said Jasmine Mack, a senior biomedical sciences major from Linden and treasurer of the chapter.
There will be boxes on the first floor of Patterson Hall and the third floor of Hawkins Hall and a table in the Trojan Center daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to gather items.
“Our goal is to just at least make someone have a smile on their face by giving clothes they couldn’t get,” said Kayla Gorden, senior and president of the chapter from Dothan.
The last day to donate items is Oct. 14. The donations will be given to the local Red Cross and Salvation Army.
The organization will be holding more events during Alpha Kappa Alpha week, which will take place from Oct. 2 through Oct. 8.
“I would encourage the college community to participate in all the events that they are planning for AKA week,” Townsend said. “It’s not just a social event, but it is an opportunity for the community to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”
