NABJ's Apollo Night a success

Over $200 in donations raised for the local Boys and Girls club

The Troy chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) held its annual Apollo Night talent show last Thursday in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

The event is a fundraiser for the local Boys and Girls club. This year, the NABJ raised over $200 in donations by selling raffle tickets for a chance to win various prizes.

“I think tonight turned out very well,” said Catherine Forbes, the president of NABJ and a senior multimedia journalism major from Atlanta, Georgia. “Tonight, we had five talents perform with the opportunity to win $50.

“We also were able to collect a lot of donations for the Boys and Girls Club.”

DJ Red was on the scene, getting the crowd up and moving to party essentials like “the Cupid Flex” and “Wobble.” Everyone excitedly waited for the main action to begin.

Camille Coney, the emcee, came on stage and welcomed everyone to Apollo Night. Then, the talent began. Taj and Hope were up first, singing “Session 32” by Summer Walker. Their duo was followed by a performance of “She Used to Be Mine” by Sara Bareilles, sung by Lindsey Ludlam, a transfer student majoring in early childhood education from Enterprise, Alabama.

“I'm very nervous in public and everything, but with Troy, it just gives me a lot more confidence,” Ludlam said. “I feel like Troy is like my safe space.

“I feel the students here don't judge anybody. They're just there to support everybody who wants to show their passion.”

After the two songs, Monica Molina switched it up with a theatre game called “Change,” an improvisational activity intended to make actors think quickly on their feet. Molina called two participants to the stage and began the act.

“It was absolutely terrifying, but I think it was really good to kind of challenge what most people would be hesitant to do,” said Molina, a freshman majoring in psychology from Seale, Alabama. “Don't be afraid to try new things.

“Don't be afraid to get up and put yourself out there; you only live life once.”

To finish up the night, Ricco Riggins sang “Feelz” by Lil Peep, and Joynob Saltana sang “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran.

After all the performances were over, the contestants were called back up to the stage for voting. The crowd cheered for their favorite performances, and Joynob Saltana from Bangladesh won the $50 prize.
