The recent flurry of offseason coaching changes for the Troy football team continued this week with Head Coach Neal Brown announcing a trio of updates to the Trojans’ coaching roster.
The first announcement came Thursday when Brown announced that current coaches Matt Moore and Sean Reagan were receiving promotions in addition to their current duties working the Trojans’ offense. The next day, Brown also introduced former Trojan running back Sean Dawkins as the new running backs coach.
Moore, who was previously a co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, is now taking over as the team’s offensive coordinator in addition to his duties with the offensive line. Reagan, formerly the running backs and quarterbacks coach, will now serve as co-offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach.
“Our offensive line, quarterbacks and running backs have played at a high level the past three seasons,” Brown said following Thursday’s announcement. “Coach Moore and Coach Reagan have done an outstanding job putting our players in a position to be successful and have been integral pieces in our consistent offensive success.”
Under Moore’s guidance, the Trojan offensive line has allowed just 23 sacks in the last two seasons, which was good for first nationally in 2016 and 12th last season. Both Moore and Reagan coached at Texas Tech around the time Brown did and have years of combined experience working with him.
“I’ve worked with both Matt and Sean for six years, so there is an enhanced level of familiarity between the three of us,” Brown said. “Whether on the field or in a meeting room, our understanding of each other’s tendencies and strengths has proved to be a valuable resource for this program and its progress.”
Reagan, who has overseen the success of recent Troy running backs in Jordan Chunn, Brandon Burks, Josh Anderson and Jamarius Henderson, will continue doing so as a position coach in addition to helping Moore call plays for Brown’s offense.
Working alongside Moore and Reagan will be Dawkins, whose recent success as a running backs coach at Austin Peay caught the eye of Brown. In his one year with the FCS-level Governors, Dawkins coached their running backs to contribute to the team’s 258.8 rushing yards per game, 5.4 yards per attempt and 32
touchdowns.
Those points played a vital role in Austin Peay’s resurrected offense, accounting for 71 percent of the Governors’ total offensive touchdowns.
“I’ve had the pleasure of watching Coach Brown’s career grow from a graduate assistant when I was a senior at Troy to now as a head coach,” Dawkins said. “I look up to him as a coach and admire his body of work and his preparation for victory.
“This was an easy decision to come back to my alma mater, and I am appreciative to Coach Brown for the opportunity. I am truly grateful to be back and to be part of the Troy University football program.”
As the Trojans continue forward during a frantic recruitment season, these coaches will have a little more than seven months to prepare for the upcoming college football season and all the expectations that go along with it.
