Cal State Northridge transfer begins second season at Troy with win in Argent Financial Classic
Nick Fowlkes was born and raised in Stevenson Branch, California. After a decorated career at West Ranch High School, Fowlkes stayed close to home to play collegiate golf at Cal State Northridge.
In his first season at CSUN, Fowlkes was named an All-Big West Honorable Mention. As a freshman, he finished fourth on his team with a 73.33 stroke average. Fowlkes had two top-10 finishes and three more top-20 performances and also shot the lowest round of anyone on his team after shooting seven under at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
Fowlkes earned his first collegiate hardware in his sophomore season at the UCSB Collegiate, where he went home with the individual medal after shooting seven under par. He finished his CSUN career with a 73.15 stroke average.
“That was a huge moment for me,” Fowlkes said. “That’s something that I have always wanted to accomplish.
“I had total control over my golf ball that weekend, and I was able to succeed even with some tough conditions.”
After two successful seasons as a Matador, Fowlkes wanted a change of scenery. He entered the portal, and Troy was one of the first programs to reach out. Fowlkes traveled across the country and made a statement in his Trojan debut.
“I really wanted to move away from California and start a new lifestyle,” Fowlkes said. “The people here are great. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, they welcome you with open arms.”
Troy traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, to participate in the Everette Buick GMC Classic.
Fowlkes finished tied for third place individually in the tournament after shooting seven under for the third straight season and helped the Trojans secure a second-place finish.
Fowlkes added another collegiate trophy to his cabinet in Troy’s first tournament of the 2024 fall season. The Trojans competed in the Argent Financial Classic to open the year, and they did not disappoint. Fowlkes finished in second place individually after shooting eight under par and Troy secured its first win since the spring of 2023.
Ryan Fowlkes, Nick’s father, played golf at the collegiate level and inspired Nick to start playing.
“I didn’t start playing golf until high school, but my dad has been my swing coach ever since I got started,” Fowlkes said. “He’s been with me every step of the way and I call him after every single round.
“I can’t thank him enough for all of his help. Every time that I am out there, I think about the things that we worked on and his advice.”
Things are coming full circle for Fowlkes at Troy, as he travels with the team back to Little Rock, Arkansas, for the Little Rock Invitational. The event starts on Monday, Oct. 14 and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 15.
