NPHC stood on business at annual Step Tease performance

The annual Step Tease show is quite possibly one of NPHC’s most popular events, with hundreds of supporters showing up each year, leaving standing room only in Crosby Theater. This year was no different as every seat was full with cheering crowd members.

The historical significance of stepping is evident in each performance. It is a tradition that started with the creation of each NPHC organization in the early 1900s. Step shows have origins in traditional African dance and have become a staple in Black Greek life as a way to show unity and admiration for each group’s organization.

Everyone, from supporters to organization members, cheered for the performers.

“Oh, I was hollering and screaming!” said Ty’Niyah Andrews, a senior majoring in elementary education from Chipley, Florida, and member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.  “Big ee-yip for my sorors. I love them so dearly, and I think they did an excellent job.

“They held that lean very tight, and we always shake that monkey. It was a bunch of fun; I wish I'd been out there on stage with them today.”

“[The Step Tease] is a compilation of all of our Divine 9 Greek organizations,” said NPHC President and member of Troy Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Teyshaun Williams, a senior cyber security major from Hoover, Alabama. “When we work together, we’re able to host and connect with the student body on a larger scale than when we do individual events.

“The students and our community are always who we want to reach.”

Williams also spoke about how proud he is of each organization.

“I’m most proud of NPHC and UAC putting on this event year after year,” Williams said. “It’s always wonderful to have a tradition that gets better and better each year.

As president, I’m so proud of every organization for getting up there and performing. Each organization sacrificed their time, money and invested in creating this show. Seeing their hard work come to life was truly amazing.”

Step shows are not only about the performances, but also the community.

“If you are interested in joining an organization, it's great to get your face out there,” said Alexandria Liptrot, a senior majoring in accounting from Birmingham, Alabama and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. “Also, NPHC has community service and drives where we give back to the community.”

The next step event will be on Nov. 2 held by the Troy Alphas. Follow @troynphc on Instagram for information and events.
