Softball season is on the horizon, but before we get there, we must get through fall ball.

One fall ball game last week pitted the Trojans against the Chipola Indians at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojan faithful were treated to an offensive explosion that led to an 18-1 Trojan victory.

The fall ball schedule is eight games and gives Troy a range of opponents to test their skills against. The Trojans also beat Snead 27-4 and fell 7-5 at Georgia Tech. Under fall ball rules, the game was 10 innings instead of the regular seven.

“I don’t care who you’re playing – four hits, one run, 10 innings, that’s a strong showing” said head coach Eric Newell on the Trojans showing against Chipola.

The lone run was given up late in the game. Of the six pitchers to see the circle, five had scoreless outings.

Several Trojans saw game action, some getting reps that are scarce in the regular season. Starters did see action but were removed in a staggered manner.

“We broke the game up into smaller games and get people lots of at-bats and lots of opportunities to see what they got,” said Newell.

The Trojan offense took a few innings to get going, but once they did, the scoreboard reflected it. The first run came from a long ball in the bottom of the third inning.

The moon shined bright and temperatures dropped, but the Trojan bats were blazing. Annie Orman, Hallie Ueberroth and Sarah Beth Brake all went yard. In addition to that, Troy strung six multi-run innings together.

“It’s a pass the bat mentality – put it on the next person,” said Newell.

Fall ball is seen as a testing period – on the fly adjustments were made throughout the course of the game. All over the diamond were new faces or faces that hadn’t been seen in that position.

Some players, such as Savannah Money were in their usual position, while others such as Taylor McKinney received the nod in center field.

Troy will continue finetuning their team through the fall ball period as well as the preseason. Their final fall ball game is against Gulf Coast. The game is set for Oct. 25. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the Troy Softball Complex.
