Outdoor track and field impresses to start season

Splitting the squad into two locations, the South Alabama Invitational and USF Bulls Alumni Invitational, can be a tough task, but Troy Track and Field was up to the challenge last weekend.

With only half of the group competing in Mobile, Alabama, both the men and women finished second in the team standings. The Trojans fell just short of South Alabama but did outperform Sun Belt foe Southern Miss among others.

It was Martin Bouldo leading the way for Troy in Mobile. Bouldo earned a first-place finish and personal best time of 1:53.56 in the 800m. Along with Chance Armstrong, Christian Buzzard and Dwight Mason, he also came away with first place in the 4x400m relay.  The 4x100m relay also landed atop the podium thanks to the efforts of Buzzard, Kendal Culmer, Noah Puttnam and Sylvester Smith.

On the women’s side, Kasia Cooper placed first in the 400m, running a time of 56.30. Freshman Lucy Turley impressed in her outdoor track debut for the 1500m. Turley ran a personal best of 5:04.61, crushing her competition by nearly 30 seconds.

In South Florida, it was the throws and sprints showing out for the Trojans. Javon Osbourne earned a sixth-place mark of 17.13m in the shot put along with a fifth-place mark of 54.75m in the discus. On the track, Tydreke Thomas came away with a fourth place 100m dash time of 10.26, a new personal best.

Freshman Shanara Richards overcame fierce competition to find a ninth-place discus throw of 46.48m in her outdoor track debut. Senior Biniosa Ezukuse led Troy in the shot put with a mark of 14.51m to place 14th.

With any rust now shaken off after the opening weekend, The Trojans are full steam ahead to the rest of the outdoor season. A trip to Oxford, Mississippi for the Ole Miss Classic Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 is up next on the calendar.
