Pitching struggles continue in second straight series loss

Troy surrendered 27 runs in a series loss to Sun Belt Conference foe Southern Miss, marking the second straight series loss for the Trojans. The Trojans are 5-5 in their last 10 games and sit at 4-5 in conference play.

In Thursday’s series opener in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the Golden Eagles offense caught fire, winning 14-4 in seven innings. Troy couldn’t recover from a five-run deficit after two innings, with Luke Lyon having his first bad start of the season.

Although Aidan Gilroy hit a three-RBI double in the sixth, it wasn’t enough for the Trojans to extend the game. Michael Osmond showed flashes of brilliance on the mound for Troy, striking out six over 3.2 innings. However, Southern Miss was still able to plate four runs off of him.

The Trojans evened things up with an exhilarating 9-8 win on Friday. There wasn’t much to speak of until Troy scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie it up at two after a double steal allowed Blake Sutton to take home.

The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but Kyle Mock tied it right back up with a two-run home run. He also added an RBI single in the eighth inning to give Troy a 5-4 lead.

“It’s one of those games where it feels like a regional with all the fans here,” said head coach Skylar Meade in a postgame interview on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Kyle Mock, I think his swing is one that, perhaps, gets lost in the game because of the way runs went back and forth at the end.”

Back-and-forth it was, as Southern Miss took a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning. Brooks Bryan came up clutch in the ninth inning, hitting a two-RBI triple as part of a three-run frame. Despite surrendering one run in the bottom half of the inning, the Trojans hung on to win.

Saturday’s rubber match ended in a 5-3 Troy loss. Southern Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead that was narrowed with another Mock home run in the second inning.

Mock finished the game 2-3 and ended the weekend 6-10 with four RBIs. The Trojans DH is getting on base at a 43% clip after a slow start to the season.

Brooks Bryan came through in the clutch again, hitting a two-run shot to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles were able to score two runs off Logan Ross in the seventh to put the game away.

Tuesday, the Trojans got back on track as they travelled to Montgomery, Alabama. Troy won a 14-3 run-rule contest against Alabama State behind a potent offense and solid pitching.

Kole Myers, Will Butcher and Bryan all homered in the win with Myers had 3 RBIs on the evening. Jay Dill and Grayson Stewart kept the Hornets at bay with a combined six innings of two-run ball.

After a Wednesday contest at Jacksonville State. The Trojans will return home to face Arkansas State. The Red Wolves are still looking for their first conference series win. The three-game series starts Friday at 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace, where the Trojans have a 10-3 record.
