Troy University’s Popular music ensemble POPulus has begun recording their newest EP filled with student-written original music.
POPulus is a student ensemble that is known around campus for performing covers of popular songs around campus, most notably at the tailgate terrace on game days or in the ampitheater for Troypalooza.
“I'm excited about this EP,” said Malachi Everett, POPulus bass player and a sophomore music industry major from Brundidge, Alabama. “I’m looking forward to the release, and I think Troy’s students will be inspired by it.”
Earlier in the semester, POPulus accepted original song submissions from Troy’s student body. This year, one student whose work was selected was senior communications major Bryson Bishop from Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
“The song I submitted is called ‘Out Alive,’” Bishop said. “I originally wrote it when I was in eighth grade. “The song is about struggling with mental health. I have friends and family who have mental health issues, and I wanted to bring awareness to the topic, so I wrote this song. “I'm very happy that POPulus chose to record and release this song. It's a very cool experience. I'm excited to watch the production of the song and how the band brings it to life.”
POPulus’s original work is entirely student produced, which is what band members said makes their music unique.
“What makes all of this so special is that it’s driven by the students,” said Madison Smith, associate producer of the EP and music industry graduate student from Montgomery, Alabama. “We have undergraduate writers, we have undergraduate producers, we have undergraduate engineers and undergraduate performers.
“This is something that people talk about but don't always move forward with. We give people a safe space to musically and creatively explore so they can apply it to their future profession.”
POPulus plans to release the EP in the Spring of 2025. Readers can also listen to POPulus' latest body of work titled ‘Rose Colored Glasses’ on all music streaming services.
