Insomniac Games brings players back to the world of “Ratchet and Clank” to PS4 on April 12.
As a person who has never played “Ratchet and Clank” before this reboot, I was thoroughly impressed by how gorgeously it presented itself.
The transitions between cut scenes and gameplay are almost seamless, and one could go so far as to say that the game runs at 60 frames per second.
And, in a world of dismally lighted games, “Ratchet and Clank” is full of vibrant colors and humor.
There isn’t much to say about the storyline and characters themselves that hasn’t already been said, but I found both Ratchet and Clank to be two really charming characters.
I almost immediately fell in love with Ratchet’s fluffy ears, but that’s an aesthetic preference. Any characters with fluffy ears get a 10/10 in my book.
Also, small robots named Clank that fight against the odds, the odds being a giant killer robot that chases them within the first 30 minutes of the game.
Some characters also break the fourth wall within the first few levels.
“See you in the next reboot,” said a character dubbed only “The Plumber.” He was called the “Mechanic” in the first iteration of the game, and there are wild theories surrounding his role in the game.
Actually, one of the search suggestions for his name on Google is “The plumber is God.”
Sony’s website says, “ ‘Ratchet and Clank’ takes a deeper look at the characters’ origin stories and modernizes the original gameplay.”
The gameplay is one of the smoothest games I have played since “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.”
Maybe it’s the frame rate.
Maybe it’s just how smooth Ratchet’s wrench swings around and destroys enemies.
Regardless, people shouldn’t have a hard time navigating the game.
It also offers three game modes: casual, normal and hard.
Casual was a bit TOO easy, since it also simplified the controls, but normal hits the spot just right if you like coasting through the storyline without pulling your hair out.
“Ratchet and Clank” is a genuinely fun game. I caught myself smiling at times and laughing along with the quips made in the dialogue.
This is also a nice break from “Dark Souls III” if you picked that up the same day. No frustration, just good-natured platforming and smashing things.
This formula is addicting.
I found myself wanting to keep playing, but I had things to do. It was really hard to step away from, which is a rare quality for a game to have nowadays.
A “Ratchet and Clank” movie, which is based on the video game, was also in production as the game was being developed. The movie will be released in theaters on April 29.
I give the game a 9/10, and highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a lighthearted game.
