“Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight,” Sailor Moon is coming back!
During the 20th Anniversary event on Aug. 4 last year, a new anime series from the classic 90s manga was announced. Due to production issues it has been pushed farther away.
“Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” is the story of a 14-year-old girl named Usagi Tsukino who is infamous for being late to class, failing every test, and eating constantly.
One day, on her way to school, she finds a stray black cat and helps it. When she returns home, the cat tells her that she is a soldier of the moon who must find the Moon Princess and defend the Earth from enemies.
The manga, written by chemist Naoko Takeuchi, is one of the most legendary manga to date, with few other series’ names being as popular and iconic. Takeuchi pulled inspiration for the series from Greek and Roman mythology, astronomy, astrology, and advanced chemistry, all being featured in characters’ strengths, names, and powers.
The manga was originally published from February 1992 to March 1997 by Kodansha. The anime ran from March 1992 to February 1997. The manga started as Takeuchi wanting to make a magical girl story in outer space, titled “Sailor V.”
After hearing that Toei wanted to convert it to an anime, Takeuchi made Sailor V, otherwise known as Sailor Venus, a member of a team and started a new series for the anime.
The anime was based on the manga chapters that were released monthly, resulting in the anime being close to the manga. But, there were still episodes that weren’t originally part of the story.
The anime has become one of the most successful and well-known names among all audiences, as well as one of the longest running magical girl series, spanning over 200 episodes.
Sailor Moon also inspired a set of musical stage shows based on the anime with some original content, often referred to as “SeraMyu.” Over 800 shows were performed between 1993 and 2005 during either the winter or summer.
The new series will be a fresh start for the anime, being based entirely off of the manga and following it much closer than the original anime series, which had to wait for the manga to be published each month. The new series will be called “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal.”
Though no videos have been released, the key image given by Toei Animation has shown that they will be sticking to the manga, even in art style. The brooch Sailor Moon wears is the same as in the manga, a gold circle with a moon imprinted on it and four gems representing the first four Sailor Scouts introduced: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus.
This is already a step in the right direction, since the original series’ brooch was a gold circle with the moon imprint and a single pink gem.
“Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal” will be based on the first arc of the manga, with the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, and the Four Heavenly Kings, and focus on the Sailor Guardians finding and protecting the princess of the Moon Kingdom, Silver Millennium.
The new series will be premiering in July. The opening and ending themes will be performed by Momoiro Clover Z. The episodes will be released online and streamed internationally on NicoNico. Subtitles are currently available in 10 different languages.
