School of Accountancy

Troy’s School of Accountancy students will be serving the community this weekend by participating in tax preparation.

Dena S. Mitchell, assistant professor in the School of Accountancy, is a supervisor for this preparation.

“Troy students have been preparing income tax returns, both state and federal, and filing those returns with the US government,” she said.

“The forms are filed electronically, unless the taxpayer specifically requests to file a paper return.”

Mitchell said that the students will also be preparing any state return, as well as filing amended returns and preparing extensions.

The students participating are mostly juniors and seniors, as well as some graduate students, and the IRS – Internal Revenue Service – requires each participant to complete a separate training course for this event.

The students are mostly from the Tax 1 and Tax 2 classes, and each return they do is reviewed for accuracy before being filed. This review is required by the IRS.

Mitchell said that this service will be available to the community, not just students.

“The program, which is called VITA – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance – is sponsored by the IRS and operated locally in a partnership with the county extension office, is targeted for low income taxpayers,” she said.

“However, we have prepared returns for people outside that demographic.

We have been operating this site in downtown Troy since February and have operated one prior to that on campus.”

The event this weekend will take place on Saturday, April 6, from 12-4 p.m. Tax preparation will be available in Bibb Graves Hall in room 225. This service is to the public.
