Troy’s track and field team competed in the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this week. The Trojans had four top-five finishes, including one conference champion.
Kady Schwietz’s Sun Belt winning performance in the pentathlon at the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships crushed her own records as well as Troy’s.
Schwietz’s impressive 3809 accumulated points set a new Troy record, previously set by her in last year’s Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships at 3705.
The junior pentathlete was in peak form as she dashed to a career best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.98 seconds and matched her personal best in the high jump of 1.62 meters.
Schwietz also won the 800m portion outright with a 2:20.11s time, less than a second off her personal record and slotted into second place with a long jump of 5.51m.
Schwietz barely staved off Arkansas State athlete Miranda Burgess by a margin of only six points thanks to her career performance in the 60m hurdles to claim the first-place overall finish for the pentathlon on day one.
Day two saw three more Trojans claim top-five finishes as freshman Aaliyah Murphy snagged a fourth-place finish with her personal best performance of 55.43s in the 400m.
Graduate student Biniosa Ezukuse ‘s shot put throw of 15.17m garnered her a fifth-place finish.
Ezukuse also recorded a personal best of 18.25m in the weight throw, which resulted in a ninth-place finish.
Freshman standout Haley Wilson finished second in the preliminary round for the 800m before bolting to a career-best 2:10.38s time to secure fifth in the finals.
Finally, distance runner Makenna Calbert set a personal record in the 3000m of 10:18.89s which also puts her eighth all-time in the Troy record book.
The Troy track and field team will kick off their outdoor season on Mar. 14-15 at the South Alabama Outdoor Invitational.
