The Student Government Association (SGA) will hold the Diversity and Inclusion Student Panel as part of its “Diversity and Inclusion Week” to spark conversations that matter to Troy students.
“I think this event is important because it gives students from all walks of life a chance to talk about topics that are important, but usually left not talked about,” said SGA President Ashli Morris, a senior political science major from Athens. “I want to give students a safe environment where they can share their views with their peers and maybe learn something they wouldn’t have learned elsewhere.”
Morris urges students not to leave their opinions unheard.
“I really encourage all students, domestic and international alike, to join the conversation and speak out on what they believe in,” Morris said.
The Diversity and Inclusion Student Panel will take place Thursday, Feb. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
During the SGA’s weekly meeting, it passed constitutions for the Pendulum Performing Arts student organization and Campus Cursive at Troy.
According to the Pendulum Performing Arts constitution, its purpose is to “provide opportunities for artistic growth, encourage creativity among students, encourage students to branch out into different art forms, and host one event per semester.”
The Campus Cursive at Troy club aims to boost the general morale of the campus by distributing notes of encouragement and love around campus for them to be found by students, faculty and staff.
Senator Holly Scott, a junior multimedia journalism major from Panama City and the chairperson of the campus life committee, raised concerns, saying the Campus Cursive might cause a litter problem on campus.
Senator Brett Buchanan, a sophomore human resources management major from Blue Springs, Missouri, and a member of the constitution and rules committee, said it would be up to the members of the organization to keep track of all the notes and make sure there isn’t a litter problem.
Next, Senator Emma Turner, a junior exercise science major from Huntsville and SGA’s student welfare chair, announced that the next Food Advisory Committee of Troy (FACT) meeting will be Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.
Turner said FACT meets once a semester, and it is the best way for students to communicate with decision makers regarding food on campus.
“The FACT meeting is the best way to talk about any ideas, suggestions, concerns or opinions that you might have about on-campus food,” Turner said. “This is your chance to talk to the people who make the decisions about the food in Troy.”
During that same meeting, Hillary Barron, Ryan Degale, Ashley Howell, Lilyanna Everett, Garren Minor and Alli Drummonds were sworn in as senators following spring semester vacancy elections.
