Soccer battles as conference skid continues

Dolce Villaflor records breakout performances, scoring twice as Trojans end scoreless streak

Brady Fitch photo Dolce Villaflor stands during Thursday’s match against Texas State.

After a highly contested first half that saw both teams put the ball in the back of the net, Texas State scored an 82nd minute-goal to give the Bobcats a 2-1 win against the Trojans.

“I thought we battled against a team that’s top of the conference on our side of the division,” said head coach Stuart Gore. “I think we went toe-to-toe and got a deserving goal.”

The goal that put the Trojans level with the Bobcats was none other than an olimpico goal -- a goal scored straight from a corner kick.

“Dolce’s got it in her locker,” said Gore. “We’re normally good off set pieces so sometimes teams are waiting for Delaney Wells to come to the back post and head it.

“I think the goalkeeper jumped out too early, and she obviously helps it in.”

That goal also ended a four-match goalless streak for the Trojans which happened to be their longest slump since 2009.

“It’s great that we broke our goal drought,” said Gore.

However, the 2-1 final score did not come without controversy as a Bobcat defender made a questionable tackle on Trojan forward Tatum Tishler that, if called, would have awarded the Trojans with a penalty kick and a chance to level the match.

“I didn’t see the ball move, so I think it was a foul on Tatum,” said Gore. “I’m going to go back and watch it.”

Another controversy in the match came earlier in the match when goalkeeper Une Georgsen suffered a blow that would see her leave the match in the first half while the Bobcat would only be shown a yellow card. “The girl didn’t really try to make a play on the ball, and I think the referee has got to do a better job at protecting Une,,” said Gore.

However,  there would be no controversy in their next match as they took a 4-1 defeat at the hands of arch nemesis, the South Alabama Jaguars.

The Jaguars took an early lead, entering halftime up 2-0, in the second half the Trojans would find success with Dolce Villaflor netting a 66th minute goal that would make the score 2-1 before the school in Mobile would put a dagger in the hearts of Trojan players and faithful alike with two late goals in the 88th and 90th minutes to seal the deal.

The Trojans travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, over the weekend to play Southern Miss. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.
