Soccer continues conference drought

After a 4-1 loss against South Alabama last Sunday, the Trojans couldn’t turn things around Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

After closing out the first half in her first career appearance against Texas State for an injured Une Georgsen, redshirt sophomore Nittany Vega made her first start in goal where she would record the first three saves of her career.

The Golden Eagles would have nearly triple as many shots as the Trojans, tallying a whopping 17 shots to the Trojans six. The Golden Eagles also recorded six shots on goal, two of which found the back of the net. Troy managed four shots on goal.

While Troy entered the match with the second most corner kicks in the Sun Belt Conference, the Golden Eagles held them to just one across 90 minutes while Southern Miss themselves recorded seven corners.

Freshman Hailey Phillips would be a light in the dark for the Trojans, recording a career-high three shots and matching a career high of two shots on goal.

The Trojans will hope to end the season on a better note Thursday when they welcome the Appalachian State Mountaineers to town in what will be the first of their last three games, with two of those three taking place on Trojan soil.

“We have three games left and we just have to empty the tank in those games,” said head coach Stuart Gore.

That match will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.
