The Troy softball team picked up two wins in a fall doubleheader, topping Northwest Florida 2-0 and 5-1 on the Charles Henderson High School softball field.
Sophomore pitcher Claire Graves won game one for the Trojans (3-1, 0-0 Sun Belt), allowing no hits and recording eight strikeouts during her seven innings in the circle.
Both teams had trouble putting the ball into play. Troy recorded the only four hits in the game, and the only scores of the game came in the bottom of the third when junior second baseman Erica Davis drove in an RBI single.
Sophomore outfielder Taylor Corbett closed out the inning with a run of her own. Davis led the Trojan offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
The rest of the game was scoreless, and the score stood at 2-0 in the Trojans’ favor. Freshman pitcher Dharma Rosbrugh was charged with the loss for the Raiders.
Troy wasted no time getting on the board in game two as it was able to score off an error and later with an RBI from senior designated hitter Meg Willis. Northwest Florida responded in the top of the second inning as freshman infielder Selena Nunez hit a solo homer that put the Raiders on the board.
The Trojans quickly snuffed the rally as they were able to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the victory. Davis collected an RBI double to go with two unearned runs via an error and a walk.
Those runs gave Troy a 5-1 lead, which it held until the game’s end.
For the Trojans, Willis led the offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Pitchers Peyton Glover and Rachel Rigney shared the mound with Glover, getting the start and four innings in the circle.
Troy will continue its fall season when it takes on the Commodores of Gulf Coast State College on Friday, Oct. 14. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Troy Softball Complex.
