The Troy softball team split a two-game series against Southern Miss before winning two of three games against Louisiana-Monroe during the weekend. The Trojans followed that up with a pair of losses at No. 14 Florida State.
The Trojans held their own against a tough road opponent in the Seminoles, staying within three runs until FSU exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to win game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader 12-2.
The doubleheader’s nightcap went similarly to the prior game, as Troy fell behind early and struggled to slow down a dynamic Seminole offense.
Junior Kaylee Hussey scored the Trojans’ lone run in the game with a solo homer in the fifth inning, which wasn’t nearly enough to overcome a 9-1 final score in favor of the home team.
In game one against Southern Miss, the Trojans got going in the third inning when Logan Calhoun hit an RBI single to send Erica Davis home for the Trojans’ first run of the game.
The Trojans stayed hot when Katie Webb hit an RBI single and Calhoun scored to pull the Trojans within one.
The Trojans took the lead when Stephanie Snyder drove in two runs on a triple to put the Trojans up by one.
Southern Miss scored a run in the third in response to Troy’s four-run inning.
In the sixth inning, Troy took the lead for good when freshman Hope Hernandez scored Kyndal Riddick, and Calhoun notched her second RBI of the game to put Troy up 6-4.
The visitors kept the sixth inning going with Taylor Corbett scoring Calhoun, and Webb sending Corbett home to extend the lead to four points.
The Golden Eagles had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Trojan defense held strong to clinch the win 8-5.
In game two versus Southern Miss, both teams went scoreless until the third inning when Webb batted in Calhoun off an RBI single to put the Trojans up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases and scored three runs before pitcher Peyton Glover got out of the jam and ended the inning.
In the fifth inning, Calhoun hit a solo home run to put the Trojans within one run.
In the sixth inning, freshman Bailey Taylor hit an RBI single to send Riddick home and tie the game.
The Trojans took the lead after Hernandez hit an RBI single to bring Talia Truitt home, but the Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back.
In the top of the seventh, Webb scored Brooke Echols to bring Troy within one, but the comeback effort fell short as the Trojans dropped the second and final game to Southern Miss.
In game one against ULM on Saturday, the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Stephanie Snyder crossed home plate after a sacrifice fly from Davis.
Hernandez hit a solo homerun — the first of her career — to put the Trojans up 2-0.
Annie Willis kept the Warhawks scoreless and pitched a complete shutout as the Trojans took game one 2-0.
In game two against ULM, the Trojans took a first-inning lead when Snyder brought home Webb to put the Trojans up 1-0.
Louisiana-Monroe scored its first run of the series in the fourth inning. The Warhawks loaded the bases, but Glover got out of the jam to limit the Warhawks to a single fourth-inning run.
In the sixth inning, junior Maddie Porter hit her first career home run to put Troy up 4-1. The Trojans kept the scoring going with four runs in the sixth inning alone.
The Warhawks scored two runs to cut the deficit, but Troy exploded for five runs in the seventh, including a grand slam from Taylor. It was her first career home run and gave her team a 14-3 win in game two.
In the final game of the series, Troy took the lead early but fell behind when the Warhawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Trojans didn’t score again until Davis hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to cut the ULM lead to 6-4.
Troy couldn’t score in the seventh inning and fell to the Warhawks, preventing the visitors from securing the series sweep.
The Trojans will resume Sun Belt Conference play this Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex in a three-game series against nationally ranked Louisiana. The Trojans will play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
