Spectrum Alliance to hold fairy prom night

by PJ Heath

Troy University’s Spectrum Club will hold a Second Chance Prom for those who were unable to attend prom or had an unpleasant prom experience.

This prom is open to all Troy University students, and primarily catered to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Students do not have to be members of the LGBTQ+ community to attend, but representatives ask that students be respectful of those who in attendance who are a part of that community.

Emma Thomason, a junior theatre major from Hoover, Alabama, is the president of the Spectrum Club.

“I love this event because it is a fun night for us all to come together, dance, eat and celebrate life,” Thomason said. “It is easy to get caught up in the hussle and bustle of college life so it's nice to have events like this where we can unwind and have fun.”

Some members of the LGBTQ+ community do not have a good prom experience, especially if they have not expressed their identity. This prom also serves as a second prom opportunity for students who did not get to attend a prom due to COVID-19.

Arizona Nichols, an interdisciplinary studies major from Pike Road, Alabama, is the treasurer of the Spectrum Club.

“It is important for people to attend so we may all have fun as a group and focus on the importance of our community,” Nichols said. “I love the idea of a second prom, and I think anyone who wishes for a do-over should attend.”

Nico Hatch, a freshman history major from Wetumpka, Alabama, is the secretary of the Spectrum Club.

“This is an opportunity for everyone, regardless of their backgrounds, gender identity or sexual orientation to come make fun, lasting memories,” Hatch said. “It really is going to open doors for people and provide a fantastic way to let loose.”

In 2022, the prom had approximately 30 people in attendance, so the Spectrum Club is hoping to have at least the same number, if not more.

Food and drinks - including soda, fruit punch, pizza, popcorn chicken, and desserts - will be served during the prom.

The Second Chance prom’s theme this year is Faeries, and representatives encourage students to dress as freely and creatively as they wish. While, there is not a designated dress code for the prom, representatives ask that students dress appropriately. They said they are excited to see the fairytale aesthetic styles.

The event will be held in the Trojan Center ballrooms on April 20 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the prom are $5 for a single person and $7 for a couple. If a student is a paid member of the Spectrum Club, single tickets are $3 and couples’ tickets are $5.
