March is Women’s History Month, and Troy University students are taking time to reflect on the women in the world who have inspired them and the role of women throughout history.
“Even though it is Women’s History Month, I believe that this should be a month where a conversation about gender equality is at the forefront,” said Laura Stokley, a freshman broadcast journalism major from Montgomery, Alabama.
Elizabeth McMahan, a sophomore biomedical sciences major from Decatur, Alabama said she looks up to Rosalind Franklin, the woman who discovered the structure of DNA.
“She went unrecognized for her work, but it really inspires me to see how much women in STEM can do,” McMahan said.
Mothers, sisters, grandmothers, professors, and even celebrities are also included in the list of women that others look up to.
Madelyn Hall, a freshman marketing major from Birmingham, Alabama, said she admires her mom.
“My mom has just always been there for me, she’s shown me what it means to be strong and independent and she’s just really special to me,” Hall said.
Along with the different women that people look up to, there are also different definitions of a strong and independent woman.
“Being a strong, independent woman to me means that you’re able to do what you feel like you have the right to do and going off on your own,” Hall said.
“Just being someone that people can look up to and who’s an inspiration to other women across the world,” McMahan said.
There are several events planned in the upcoming weeks to commemorate Women’s History Month, including a panel by New Ear Gospel Choir and Sparkle Mentoring Club called “Women’s Empowerment,” which will take place March 23 at 7 p.m. in Patterson Hall Room 105.
