Junior Javon Osbourne and sophomore Altwayne Bedward on the Troy Track and Field team are co-spotlight athletes of the week.
Javon Osbourne, a junior from Claredon, Jamaica, took first place in shot put with a score of 18.01m, a season-best for him and enough to place him top-50 in the NCAA for the spring season.
Osbourne spent his high school years at Kingston College in Jamaica being ranked eighth in the nation for his 2020-21 season for discus. In his freshman year at Troy, Osbourne broke Troy’s discus record with a score of 55.64m, qualifying him for NCAA East preliminaries. He finished the season third in the Sun Belt Conference tournament for shot put and second for discus.
In his second season at Troy, Osbourne finished first at the Sun Belt Conference tournament for shot put with a season-best and personal best of 18.40m. He also finished third in the discus at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his sophomore campaign, Osbourne also set a personal best and a school record in the discus at Samford with a throw of 58.47m.
Now in his third season at Troy, Osbourne finished in first place for shot put and second in discus throw with a throw of 57.57min his first home meet as a Trojan.
Fellow thrower Altwayne Bedward is a sophomore communications major from Westmoreland, Jamaica, who transferred from Sun Belt Conference foe Texas State. Bedward also spent his high school years at Jamaica’s Kingston College, setting the school record in shot put.
In his freshmen season at Texas State, Bedward set a personal best of 17.21min shot put, set at the Texas Invitational. He also set a personal best in discus throw with a throw of 50.86 meters.
In the recent meet hosted at Troy University, Bedward set a shot put personal best of 17.80mto place second behind teammate Javon Osbourne. Bedward also also plays host to his own podcast, aptly named “Al in All”.
The Trojans continue their season at Auburn on April 20 when they participate in the Auburn Invitational. After that they head to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays from April 25 to April 27.
