Students appreciated SGA's academic excellence week

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its second annual Academic Excellence Week from Monday, March 24 through Friday, March 28.

“The Academic Affairs committee is hoping to assist the students in their studies here at Troy University,” said Annsley Wallace, a nursing major from Greenville, Alabama. Wallace is currently serving as the chairwoman of the Academic Affairs committee for SGA. “We are aware that tests and exams can put a toll on the mind, and we hope to help destress the students by hosting helpful events.”

On Monday and Tuesday, the committee handed out free scantrons in TC from 12 - 2 p.m. On Wednesday, they held a puppy picnic in partnership with the Troy Animal Rescue Project, where students had the chance to grab a snack and pet puppies that were up for adoption.

On Thursday, they held an academic workshop for students in TC at 2 p.m. Then on Friday, they gave out free popcorn and sodas in the lobby of the library.

“These events [were] hosted to ensure the students have a study break each day throughout the Academic Excellence Week to relax and get their mind off of academics for a bit,” Wallace said.

Bryson Grimsley, a junior music major from Abbeville and member of SGA, attended the puppy picnic on Wednesday. He said it was his favorite of the week.

“It’s a chance to unwind with something as carefree as puppies,” Grimsley said. “It’s also an opportunity for puppies to get adopted.”

Haley Hoggle, a senior accounting major from Moundville, Alabama, was in the library on Friday when they handed out free popcorn.

“It was cool,” Hoggle said. “I enjoyed the popcorn after a long study session.

“It was like a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed that it was near to where students go to study which is helpful if you’re trying to pursue academic excellence.”
