Students scavenge for friends

by Libby Thornton

The International Student and Cultural Organization (ISCO) paired both international and domestic students together last Thursday for a scavenger hunt and gave them a list of clues, each of which led students to explore different parts of campus.

The clues led to common places including the Trojan Center and the Dining Hall. But they also encouraged students to think about smaller details they may not notice in the day to day.

“I believe today, specifically a scavenger hunt, allows all students to get involved in having fun and becoming acquainted with campus,” said Brianna Moore, a junior English education major from Montgomery, Alabama, and the president of ISCO. “We’re exploring all the resources on campus, but also the fun little historical facts about the university.”

The ISCO executive board spent time collecting information and learning about the university in order to create the clues the students followed.

There were also prizes for the group that could take a selfie in the most locations from the clue sheet in the hour allotted.

“I really came out here to meet new friends, and to win, of course,” said Haidyn Foley, a sophomore rehab and disabilities major from Montgomery, Alabama. “It's cool to be able to learn from other people in a friendly environment.”

The main goal of ISCO is to bring together students from across the world and create understanding.

“Honestly, hearing about ISCO was one of the reasons I came to Troy,” Moore said. “Our school prioritizes being globally competitive, and in order to do that you have to make friends first and that’s where ISCO comes in.”

Although not every student won a t-shirt and international snack pack, they were able to engage with new people and explore unknown campus spots.

“I really liked the event today, especially because I got to run around campus,” said Nafisabonu Urinkhojaeva, a junior political science major from Tajikistan, Central Asia. “I don’t know where my energy came from, but it was there today. I was just excited to visit places I haven’t seen before.”

Students can visit ISCO’s Instagram page, @isco_troyu, for information regarding future events.
