Students show Trojan pride

Emmaleigh Clegg

This past week marked the start of a new school tradition that celebrates and encourages school spirit: Trojan Pride Week.

“Trojan Pride Week is important because we need a way to celebrate the school we all love,” said Marcelles Martin, a junior political science major from Atlanta, Georgia, and the current Mr.Trojan Pride. “I hope to start this trend so the following Mr. and Miss Trojan Pride can continue to build on it.”

The week kicked off with a series of panels on topics such as community service and leadership. On Tuesday, a table was set up in the Trojan Center where students could show their love to Troy.

In the middle of the week, students had the opportunity to take pictures with T-Roy during what’s known as fried chicken Wednesday, as well as hang out with the Troy Nupes and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s for pretty Wednesday.

“My favorite event from Trojan Pride Week was definitely T-Roy being at fried chicken Wednesday,” said Nicholas Locklar, a sophomore anthropology major from Las Vegas, Nevada. ”I really enjoyed T-Roy’s presence at my favorite meal of the week.”

The end of the week consisted of a student organization appreciation night during the women's basketball game Thursday, and on Friday, a chance to pie-an-athlete, as well as Mr. and Miss Trojan Pride and Miss Troy University. The final event of Trojan Pride Week was a tailgate with the fortress before the women’s basketball game on Saturday.

“Out of all of this year's Trojan Pride Week events, I would say the one that meant the most to me would be the community service at Common Ground,” said Martin. “I was so excited to see all the kids and help them with their homework.”

Looking ahead, future winners of Mr. and Miss. Trojan Pride will be planning, promoting, and hosting Trojan Pride Week, and its events, for years to come.

“I really hope that Trojan Pride Week becomes a tradition that continues,” said Lilykate Gwin, a junior theatre major from Fairhope, Alabama. “I am really looking forward to what the future Mr. and Miss Trojan Pride have in store for us.”
