Troy University and the state of Alabama will celebrate DeMarcus Ware Day on April 19 to honor the former Troy football player for his NFL success.
Ware will be the first Super Bowl-winning player to be honored with a special proclamation from the state, as a result of both his role in the 2016 Super Bowl and his NFL career.
Ware was a member of the inaugural class of the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame. He plays with the Denver Broncos, the team that won the Super Bowl this past February.
Gov. Robert Bentley will hold a ceremony for Ware on Tuesday, April 19, at the Capitol building in Montgomery, after which Ware will address a joint session of the Alabama Legislature.
Later that evening, Ware will return to Troy, where Chancellor Jack Hawkins will present him with the Troy Distinguished Leadership Award and Troy Mayor Jason Reeves will present Ware with a key to the city during a special ceremony in the Trojan Arena at 5 p.m.
There will be a special highlight video of Ware’s Super Bowl season and footage from his time at Troy.
Ware finished his Troy football career as the program’s all-time leader in tackles for loss with 55.5 and 27 sacks for a loss of 198 yards, ranking among the top players in Troy’s football history.
Ware was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Decade Team, and he was the 2004 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. He also helped lead the Trojans to their first-ever bowl game in the 2004 Silicon Valley Football Classic.
He was selected with the 11th pick of the 2005 NFL draft and spent his first nine years in the NFL playing for the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Broncos before the 2014 football season.
Ware has made nine Pro Bowl appearances, has been named All-Pro seven times and was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
In the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, Ware sacked Tom Brady twice. In the Super Bowl, Ware sacked Cam Newton twice and recorded five tackles in the Broncos’ 24-10 victory.
