Supporting First Responders: Troy introduces the "First Responders Scholarship" to help those who serve

Troy University seeks to provide aide to first responders with tuition decrease.

Troy University has announced a new scholarship that is intended to help first responders and their family members.

The First Responders and Family scholarship will waive application fees and provide 10% of tuition for all first responders and their families. This includes spouses and dependents. They will also receive free unofficial transcript evaluation.

“I think that any way to make education more affordable for first responders is helpful,” said Ethan Brown, a Troy alum and a firefighter for the city of Troy. “With our job, we encounter a lot of different stresses that aren’t known to the general public, and adding the stress of classes with balancing the crazy work schedule on top of financial strain can really tear down a person who has to deal with and solve other people’s problems.”

Those considered first responders include law enforcement officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMT), Firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS).

“This opportunity facilitates a constant stream of exchange of ideas and enhances marketability as a community that encourages education among its employees,” said Staci Hutto, Senior Director for Out of State Operations and Admissions. “The common goal is to expand access to high quality educational opportunities for life-long learners.”

This scholarship will be applicable to associate degree programs, bachelor’s degree programs and masters degree programs. This includes online programs, Alabama campus in person classes and outside Alabama in person classes.

To receive the scholarship, students must verify their or their guardian’s first responder status by emailing Carmen Foster at fosterc@troy.edu. The first responder will send the student’s  full name, the student’s ID number, their employee or volunteer card and the required partnership code.

The first responder should send the email on behalf of the student.

The First Responders and Families scholarship was established April 1, 2024 after it was approved by Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr..

The 10% tuition scholarship will go into effect the semester in which the student notifies Troy University of their eligibility. This eligibility request must be submitted within the first week of classes for the scholarship to be applied for that term.

“For Troy University to offer a discount is a great way to help relieve an avenue of stress in a first responder student’s life,” Brown said.

The scholarship cannot be applied retroactively.
