The Department of Defense recruits Troy students at event

Troy’s Career Services held a recruitment session for a special group of employers last week for students seeking federal internships and jobs.

Students got the opportunity to meet with the United States Department of Defense Financial Future recruiters. All majors were invited to attend.

“One-on-one time with employers is hard to get,” said Director of Career Services Lauren Cole. “A lot of times our students are applying online for jobs, and they are not getting face-to-face time.

“We are trying to provide those opportunities for students.”

As students left their one-on-one business sessions, they were able to grab an informational flier where they could access a QR code and submit their resumes.

“I was interested in this because of the Department of Defense itself,” said Abhishek Singh, a graduate student from the northern part of India who’s pursuing his master's in computer science. “Since my specialization is in cyber security, I knew that this would be helpful for me in some way.

“I’m glad I got to know about more of the details of cyber security and that they got to know me.”

The internships and job opportunities available offer a range of financial opportunities.

Students can apply for more than one position.

“When they're applying for a position, and if they get hired going into it, we ask if they have a commitment to public service and are they committed,” said the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Comptroller, Program Manager for Recruitment Kimberly Carder.

“You're signing up to serve your country and protect national security through working to balance our financial statements or our budgets.

“Whether you're buying resources and making sure that the warfighter is resourced and has the services available to them, you have to have a commitment to public service. If you work hard, you'll be rewarded because there are many opportunities for you if you come willing to be a team player and focus on helping the whole.”

Later on in the day, the recruiters engaged with students on the topic of necessary skills for this type of employment while tabling in the foyer of John Robert Lewis Hall.
