The Trop represents all, not just the staff

Caroline Hughes Although I’m an English major, I used to dread grammar mechanics. That is until I became a copy editor at the Trop. Before spring 2018, I didn’t appreciate all of the hard work necessary to be an editor. I didn’t even like editing my own essays. Despite my reluctance, Georgia Blanchard, a fellow graduating copy editor, encouraged me to join the Trop staff, and I’m so glad she did. I have met and gotten closer to an amazing group of people. Working at the Trop has given me a new perspective on editing and AP style. As a professional, it is important to be familiar with multiple writing styles, as well as to know how to finetune documents. Although not often given enough attention, editing is a vital skill for all jobs and fields. Not only have my editing skills improved, but I’ve also learned to love the rush and organized chaos of the newsroom on layout night. My Wednesday nights have had a purpose for three semesters: to ensure that Trop articles are as polished and accurate as possible. Moreover, the Trop staff is a family of talented, diligent individuals and each member’s job is crucial in guaranteeing the latest newspaper is in the stands every Thursday morning. This hard work has taught me how to be a team player, a valuable life lesson which I will use for the rest of my life. I’ve also learned a lot about this campus I love so much and the wonderfully diverse and passionate people who make up the Trojan community. As I near the end of my final semester at Troy, I have been reflecting on the wonderful times I’ve spent at this university, including my time at the Trop. I have enjoyed learning to appreciate editing and the detailed process of journalistic writing. Most importantly, I have recognized that the Trop isn’t simply a paper — it is a representation of the students, faculty and staff who endeavor to make Troy and the world a place worth living in. Thank you, Trop staff, for challenging me to be a better writer, editor and individual. Here’s to the school (and newspaper) we love!
