An organization focused on building resilience in children and families in the Pike County area
The Troy Resilience Project (TRP) is a local organization with a mission of building resilience in children and families in our community. TRP believes resilience is a lifesaving skill to be taught, learned and practiced.
The organization was founded in 2019 by Dr. Elizabeth Dawson, a local pediatrician, and it has grown exponentially since then. TRP serves nearly 1,000 individuals across eight counties and has earned membership in the Alabama Network of Family Resource Centers.
Dawson is certified in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics and provides trauma assessments for TRP. She has also received national recognition for her local and national efforts in child resilience.
TRP provides many resources for families including early learning and other educational programs. The four core programs offered by the organization are: The Family Resilience Program, Healthy Families Troy, Work Force Development and Mental Health Services. They also offer A-RESET and The Sprout Early Learning Center.
The organization partners with many other community organizations and departments including other resource centers, schools and churches.
TRP holds many events throughout the year to fundraise and connect with the community. Once a month, they hold a parent café, a time for parents to connect in a calm environment while enjoying refreshments.
“It’s really just a place for parents to come and connect with other parents; they really are the experts on their own children,” said Maggie Doss, executive director of TRP. “They kind of get to communicate with each other and share ideas.”
TRP also holds regular clothing giveaways and food pantry donations.
The organization’s next event is their third annual Run for Resilience, a 5k and fun run. It will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 9 a.m. on Tailgate Terrace and will include activities for all ages.
Around the holiday season, TRP offers special services for the families already in their programs such as holiday assistance and Thanksgiving food packages. They are also looking for donations to help the community as well as the families enrolled in their programs.
“We’re always accepting food donations for our pantry, hygiene items for our care closet, and around the holidays, toy donations for the families that are in our programs,” Doss said.“Any other monetary or concrete item donations such as clothing are welcome as well.”
