Theater auditions Friday

Draven Jackson

As the fall semester begins, the Department of Theatre and Dance is preparing to hold its annual fall auditions to choose the casts for various plays and shows held throughout the year.

The auditions will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, in the Trojan Center Theatre. Registration will begin at 5 p.m., with musical theater auditions starting at 6 p.m. and acting-only auditions following the completion of musical theater.

For the auditions, students in the acting-only section will need to prepare a 60-second monologue, while musical theater auditionees will have 90 seconds to perform a monologue and a song. If students are unable to bring in their own songs or monologues, they are encouraged to audition anyway with a provided monologue and can sing “Happy Birthday.”

“We encourage everybody to come, no matter how prepared or ill-prepared they are,” said Quinton Cockrell, an associate professor of theater and dance.

Anyone auditioning in the musical theater group will have the opportunity to work with John Jinright, an associate professor of music, from 5-6 p.m. on their selected music.

Cockrell encouraged every student to audition, regardless of major, classification or time constraint.

“We have a big production that we are doing and, yes, it’s true that that rehearses almost every night from 6 until 10 and then on Sundays from 1 until 10,” Cockrell said. “But there are many other things going on this semester … there are all kinds of opportunities that have a flexible schedule.”

Students will be able to sign up for an audition spot in the office of Malone Hall on Wednesday morning, starting at 9, and they will also be able to fill out a registration form at this time.

An official season announcement will be released Wednesday, Aug. 15, but will be made available online by the end of the week.
