Theatre and Dance announced 24-25 season schedule

Updated: Aug 23

On the first day of classes, the Department of Theatre and Dance announced their shows for the 2024-25 school year; with some classics and new shows, students are eager to get back onto the stage.

“Our students are always excited to jump into shows, processes and projects,” said Victoria Averett, the director of the theatre program. “I think this year’s season was a surprise for many — we have a wide variety of productions that offer lots of different types of experiences for students and audiences.”

Some of the shows included for the fall semester are “The Old Man and the Old Moon,” “Our Lady of 7-Eleven,” and “Tempo.” It was also announced the spring musical is “The Music Man.”

For the dance department, they will be performing “Art in Motion: Twisted Tales” and “Page to Stage.” They are also putting on many showcases and senior projects throughout the semester.

“Our faculty are always keeping an eye on several things when selecting shows,” Averett said. “We have a complex set of criteria we consider when choosing seasons.”

The energy in the upstairs lobby outside of Trojan Center was a mixture of nervousness and excitement. Students lined up down the hall with monologues and songs prepared for their audition.

The students were filled with energy to begin a new season. Some had spent the entire summer preparing for auditions.

“I think it’s always a very exciting time for everyone; it’s like a big family,” said John Alloway, a junior theatre major from Troy, and a Malone Hall assistant. “More than anything, we were happy to be back together again and start this journey into the new shows.”

The theatre and dance department are taking some creative liberties. For example, “The Music Man” will be performed at Troy University’s amphitheater, an open-air venue behind Rushing Hall.

“I’m glad we’re doing ‘Music Man;’ it’s going to be fun in the amphitheater,” said Emma Remaley, a sophomore theatre major from Prattville, Alabama. “I don’t remember the last time we’ve done an amphitheater show.”

“I think it’s going to be really personal with the audience,” Remaley said. “We’re going to draw people in with the music; it’s going to be great.”

The preparations for the upcoming shows have already begun. Auditions and callbacks are over for this semester, and the cast will soon start rehearsing. Auditions for “The Music Man” will take place next semester.
