TROY Public Radio (TPR) has a new show on its roster, and it was created by a few Troy University students who wanted to bring something different to the university’s radio station.
“Mad Melodies” is a new podcast on TPR that gives Troy University students the chance to promote their music as well as music culture, music history, and other musical topics.
The podcast will also feature different types of music to promote the diversity in the music industry.
“Troy University is a diverse school, so why not show people music that they probably have never even heard of,” said Marissa Lacey, the creator of “Mad Melodies” and a senior broadcast journalism major from Madison, Alabama.
Once Lacey started working on her passion project, she realized that producing a podcast by herself was more work than she could handle, leading to the podcast getting multiple co-hosts and producers.
One of the co-hosts and producers of the podcast is Jaelanne Thomas, a senior broadcast journalism major from Eufaula, Alabama. Thomas helped Lacey get the first foundations of the podcast up and running.
“It was just me in the beginning, and it was really hard to do everything by myself and Jaelanne was dedicating some of her hours here to help me out,” Lacey said.
Thomas is very grateful for the opportunities the podcast has given her.
“I never thought that I would be able to do something that I truly love, so this is a great opportunity for me as well as students like myself,” Thomas said.
The podcast not only benefits Lacey and Thomas, but one artist featured on the podcast believes it could benefit other students as well.
Jack Anderson, a junior multimedia journalism major from Dothan, Alabama, is one of the students who has been a guest on the podcast with his music. Anderson said he thinks that the podcast gives students the chance to find new music in an age where there is an abundance of it.
“We can get bored fast, and can give you an opportunity to discover new music and try it in a new place,” Anderson said.
Lacey and Thomas are both seniors and want the podcast to be more than just their podcast, they want it to be something that continues to grow when they’re gone.
“ just makes me really happy, I feel like it’s going to be in good hands when I’m gone,” Lacey said.
The “Mad Melodies” podcast can be listened to on Spotify, Soundcloud, NPR One, Apple Podcasts and PRX.org.
The podcast can also be followed on Instagram @tpr_madmelodies and on Facebook and Twitter.
