Troy’s men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their impressive performances as they took down multiple conference opponents at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday, Feb. 7.
Underclassmen led the women’s team as it outscored UL-Lafayette. The men’s team also had notable freshmen efforts that resulted in the Trojans outscoring Little Rock.
“We did many things well this weekend—there were a lot of personal bests and big highlights of the season,” head coach Marc Davis said. “As a team, we have to learn how to compete better in scoring situations.
“It’s great to beat conference opponents. However, in order to be where I believe this team can be, we have to step it up over the next two weeks. The future is very bright for this young team and they are still learning how to handle these high-pressure situations.”
Sophomore Niata Alexander, a Douglasville, Georgia native, darted her way to a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, with a season-best time of 56.17 seconds. Her teammate, junior Dallas Worthy of Covington, Georgia, followed with a third-place finish and a time of 57.13 seconds.
Worthy was also a part of the 4×400-meter relay team that finished seventh out of 16 teams. The Trojan relay team finished ahead of Sun Belt competitors UL-Lafayette, Arkansas State, Georgia State and ULM.
Freshman Tyson Robinson put out another impressive performance in Birmingham. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native took third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:54:246. The first place winner was narrowly ahead with a finish of 1:54:245.
Junior Cameron Rice of Huntsville, Alabama, slashed his indoor 400-meter record with a time of 49.45 seconds, earning him sixth place. Rice ran for another personal best in the 200-meter dash, with a seventh-place finish in 21.87 seconds.
Sophomore Garrison Floyd, a Fort Walton, Florida, native, set another personal best. Floyd leapt to a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, with a personal best time of 8.12 seconds. Floyd’s 6.87 meter long jump also set a personal best.
Zach Douglas of Cullman took home another runner-up honor in the shot put, with a throw of 17.40 meters. The throw sets a personal best for Douglas’s indoor career.
The Trojan women will travel to the Birmingham CrossPlex again for the Samford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
