Troy baseball is months away from kicking off their season, but they are already making headlines. Recently, news broke of pitcher Blake Cavill being selected to play on Australia’s U23 team in the 2024 Baseball World Cup. While that news circulates, the team is actively preparing as if the season starts tomorrow.
One way the Trojans are improving is through the transfer portal. According to D1baseball.com, Troy welcomed two Top-85 impact transfer pitchers through the portal.
Colby Frieda is no. 64 on the list, and Noah Edders is ranked no. 70.
The duo of righties is expected to produce for the Trojans. Frieda comes in as a righty out of the bullpen, standing at 6-3. Edders fills a starting role as the right-handed pitcher and stands slightly taller than Frieda at 6-4.
Both pitchers bring useful elements to the pitching staff, but they are expected to fill different roles. Freida provides an aggressive element to the team -- he comes in after striking out around 25% of the batters he saw over his tenure at Kentucky.
Frieda had an impressive junior campaign with the Wildcats — appearing in 12 relief appearances with a 7.71 earned run average. Although his ERA was elevated, he held opponents scoreless in seven of his 12 appearances. He also held opponents to a sub .275 batting average.
Edders is a strikeout threat, as well, but he also brings leadership experience. Edders is transferring in after a season where he struck out 76 batters in 79 innings at Bradley. The redshirt sophomore led the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.
Edders produced those numbers in just 15 starts. In two of those starts the Woodridge, Illinois native pitched eight innings while ringing up 10 batters.
Both pitchers are welcome additions to the Trojans pitching staff. Edders enters a rotation in which one pitcher posted a sub 4.00 ERA during the 2023 campaign. From a bullpen perspective, there were two pitchers with a sub-4.00 ERA.
Troy is set to display its new-look roster in two preseason games. The first is against Northwest Florida on Friday, Oct. 18.
