Trojans pick up first win in home opener

The Troy football team defeated Charleston Southern 44-16 to earn its first win of the season on Saturday, Sept. 12.

 

Troy took the lead on the first possession with a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Teddy Ruben. Senior defensive end Tyler Roberts recorded a sack on the first possession. Teddy Ruben his second touchdown of the game on the second possession on touchdown throw from sophomore quarterback Brandon Silvers.

 

Charleston Southern scored once to narrow the lead to 14-7.

 

Senior running back Brandon Burks and the offense responded with opening up the second quarter with a touchdown to bring the score to 21-7 in Troy’s favor.

 

Charleston Southern turned over the ball in the red zone during the second quarter, but Brandon Silvers was sacked in the end zone for a safety to bring the score to 21-9.

 

Brandon Burks scored on a short touchdown run to bring it to 27-9 in the third quarter. A field goal by Troy at the beginning of the fourth brought it to 30-9. A punt return touchdown by  Reuben in the fourth extended the lead to 37-9.

 

Senior running back Khary Franklin, returned a punt for a touchdown to bring the score to 44-9 in the fourth.

 

Charleston Southern added a late touchdown to cut the lead to 44-16, but it was too little too late as the Trojans claimed their first victory of the season.

 

The Trojans return to action when they go on the road to take on Big Ten heavyweight Wisconsin. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
