Trojans vanquish the Blazers

The Troy softball team snapped its five-game losing streak in the second game of the UAB doubleheader on Tuesday, March 31.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Blazers scored first in the second inning.

The Trojans tied things up in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore shortstop Becca Hartley hit a solo homer over the left field wall.

Blazers’ freshman pitcher Megan Smith allowed only four hits and also had three strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, several UAB singles and two Trojan errors allowed two Blazers to cross home plate.

Senior left fielder Hayley Davis launched a two-run home run to make the final score 5-1.

Things might have gone differently if Troy had been able to capitalize on having two players in running position in the bottom of the first.

However, Hartley and senior first baseman Michelle Phelps were struck out looking and then the Blazers wrapped up the inning with a final out with junior catcher Hannah Day getting tagged at third base.

The tables turned for the Trojans in the second game and lit up the scoreboard, winning 6-1.

Day started off the game with an RBI double that brought junior shortstop Kate Benton home in the bottom of the first.

UAB responded with a run of its own in the third, but Troy raised the Blazers in the same inning and took the lead.

Harley grounded out, but allowed Benton to advance to third and freshman center fielder Carli Kayler to score. Benton scored shortly after on a wild pitch.

The fourth inning was quiet for both teams. The next time the Trojans came to bat three more runs were scored. Junior pitcher Ashley Rainey sent a two-run homer over the wall to secure the game.

The Blazers couldn’t find any traction in the sixth or seventh inning being shut down by strikeouts and a double play.

The Trojans will host ULM over the weekend with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3. The first game will start at 3 p.m.
