Trojans vs. Texas Tech & Uconn

February 28, 2013

Hot off the heels of their Florida A&M sweep, the Troy Trojans were looking to continue their dominance this past weekend when they traveled to Orlando for the Wawa Classic for a three game weekend.

First up was Texas Tech, who were looking to knock the Trojans off their pedestal.

But Troy kept rolling, scoring 10 runs in their fifth straight game as Troy went on to win 10-3 on Friday.

The Red Raiders got on the scoreboard first with a Devon Conley two-run single in the first inning, but the men of Troy were quick to respond.

Clay Holcomb (3-for-3, one RBI) nailed a double to the right side of center field in the third inning, followed by a Tyler Vaughn(3-for-5, two RBIs) single that put runners on the corners, setting up a Logan Pierce (4-for-5, two RBIs) single and a Trae Santos(2-for-5, three RBIs) single that gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

Garrett Pitts(1-for-4) hit a homerun in the fourth to put the Trojans up 4-2 followed by a Pierce RBI double in the fifth.

The sixth inning saw the Trojans open the flood gates, scoring three runs thanks to back-to-back errors from the Red Raiders. Holcomb, Vaughn and Pierce each delivered RBI singles in the inning, making the score 8-3.

Holcomb doubled again in the eighth, with Tyler Vaughn able to bring him in with an RBI single up the middle. Last weeks National Player of the Week Danny Collins doubled up to bring Vaughn home, bringing the scoring to its climax.

Will Starling picked up the win for the Trojans, his second of the young season. The right-handed junior struck out four before passing his duties to the bullpen.

Looking to continue their immaculate hitting, Troy was poised with a showdown against the Connecticut Huskies on Saturday.

A plethora of errors, however, brought the steamrolling men of Troy to a halt when they fell 13-8 on Saturday.

Singles from Danny Collins (2-for-3, two RBIs), Logan Pierce (3-for-5, two RBI’s) and Tyler Vaughn(2-for-5) gave the Trojans an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and a half before a Uconn double-play took Troy off the mound.

In the bottom of the second, the Huskies were able to knot the game up at two a piece with a two run single by Vinny Siena. A one hit double and back-to-back homeruns in the third gave Uconn a 5-2 lead.

The damage had been done, but the Huskies continued to rub salt into the Trojan wound when they scored five runs in the fifth inning. Two more in the seventh gave them a 12-2 lead.

Despite being down, Troy was far from out and determined to make a comeback.

In the eighth, Collins drove home a run with a single Trae Santos (1-for-5, two RBIs) had a two-run triple down the right-field line and David Hall brought home a run with a ground out.

Ryan Brady (1-1) was charged with the loss for the Trojans.

Troy was scheduled to play Central Florida Sunday afternoon, but the cancelled due to inclement weather pushing the start to the first game of that day three hours back.

Troy is back in action this weekend when they host Southern Mississippi for a weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday.
