The Troy women’s golf team won the GSU Invitational last week, their first win since 2020. The Trojans beat out Georgia State, the hosts of the tournament, by six strokes after the final round of play was canceled because of inclement weather.
“I’m so proud of this group,” head coach Randy Keck told Troy Athletics. “All of the hard work has finally paid off. We have been getting better and better and felt that we were so close to winning, so it feels great for the hard work to come full circle.”
Troy had four top 15 individual performances with three of those players finishing in eighth place or better. Junior Alyssa Mercado and freshman Manya Saini finished tied for fourth place individually. The pair shot 149 over 36 holes, an impressive five over par.
Senior Bruna Roqueta finished tied for eighth place after shooting six over par in her two rounds and sophomore Katelynn Altese wrapped up the Trojans’ top individual performances by shooting eight over par to tie for thirteenth place.
Laura Fangmeyer had the highest score out of the team in this tournament, shooting nine over and finishing tied for eighteenth place, however she bounced back and shined for the Trojans the following week at the ULM Invitational.
The sophomore from Tullin, Australia finished tied for seventh after shooting an even par, 216. Fangmeyer finished the tournament with 13 birdies, which was the second-most out of the entire field, en route to completing her third round of the season under par.
Troy is looking to bounce back after its ninth-place finish at the Sun Belt Championship on April 15-18. The championship takes place at the Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Alabama.
