Tropolitan Player of the Week

by Taylor Fraze

This week’s spotlight is junior Tai’Sheka Porchia of the Trojans’ women’s basketball team.

Porchia is a 6-foot-1 junior forward from Camden, Arkansas. She was the reason Troy defeated both their opponents last week after stellar back-to-back performances. Porchia is usually not the top performer on the Trojans team, but this shows how much depth the team truly has.

Porchia’s first two years of college basketball were played at Pensacola State College where she averaged 13.9 points in 2020 and 14.7 in 2021. She transferred to Troy this past season. In her first season with the Trojans, Porchia is averaging 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

It is a minor fall off from her time at Pensacola State, but that is expected when transferring from junior college to DI sports. Despite this huge jump, Porchia has blended well with her teammates and become one of the stars for the Trojans.

Troy defeated Texas State on Feb. 2, 84-78 behind Porchia’s performance. She scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed a seaso- high 15 rebounds. She led the Trojans in both categories against the Bobcats. She was highly efficient with her shooting scoring on 69-percent of her attempts. In Troy’s second matchup against Louisiana, Porchia’s performance was not as good but still as important.

Troy defeated Louisiana on Feb. 4 in overtime behind a buzzer-beating shot from Porchia. She scored 12 points on 42-percent shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds. Her most important basket came with just 1.8 seconds remaining in the game on a game winning layup to put Troy up for good 81-80 on the Rajun Cajuns.

Porchia’s performances helped Troy improve to 15-8 with a 10-2 conference record. Porchia will have a chance to improve her stats when the Trojans are back in action Thursday against Arkansas State in Trojan Arena. The game will tip off at 5:15 P.M.
